Using technology developed within Opera Software, I was tasked to design and work with mobile carriers, specifically in countries where data is expensive, to provide users access to popular sites and apps. This technology became what we called “App Passes” and was built into the Opera Max app, an app that was pre-loaded into certain OEM devices around the world.
App passes would be available anywhere from 5 minutes of unlimited access to multi-day’s worth to a specific app. The various lengths of time would be available for redemption at a maximum of once a day and at the cost of a simple button press, or at a low-cost nominal price.
The “Pass Store” would provide varied multiple options every day to redeem usage. In this example, watching a short 1-minute ad would enable 10-minutes of free YouTube usage, but alternatively the user would also be able to redeem 5-minutes at no cost.
